Background

2010 - : Professor in Environmental Chemistry at the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology, National Environmental Research Institute, Aarhus University, Denmark, with focus on "Environmental and Human Exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants".

2008 - : Affiliated Professor in Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Life Sciences, Copenhagen University.

2001 - 2010: Senior Scientist at the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology at the National Environmental Research Institute, Aarhus University, Denmark. Started in 2004 the "chemical activity research group".

2000 - 2001: Senior Study Director and Product Manager at the Department of Environmental Toxicology at Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Environmental toxicity testing of (difficult to test) chemicals for Chemical Industries as well as industrial task forces.

1996 - 2000: Doctoral study: "Partitioning based approaches to study exposure and effects of hydrophobic organic substances" at the Research Institute of Toxicology, Utrecht University, Netherlands. Supervision by Dr. J.L.M Hermens, Dr. J. Tolls and Dr. D.T.H.M Sijm.

1995 - 1996: Research assistant at the Institute for Environmental Science and Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. Development of algal toxicity test apparatus and fluorometric analytical method.

1994 - 1995: One year study as Fulbright scholar at the Center for Great Lakes Studies, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, including M.Sc. thesis "Factors affecting results of algal toxicity tests" that received highest grade.

1989 - 1995: Technical University of Denmark. M.Sc. (Engineering) with specialization in environmental analysis based on chemistry, microbiology and statistics.

Key qualifications

Analytical techniques to determine the exposure of organic contaminants in various environmental matrices (e.g. by Solid Phase MicroExtraction (SPME)). These partitioning based techniques are directed (1) at the determination of freely dissolved concentrations and chemical activities, (2) minimally destructive techniques that are suited for the screening of new (unknown) substances, (3) at reducing the use of solvents within the environmental laboratory and (4) at the integration of sampling and sample preparation into one experimental step.

Risk Assessment of hydrophobic organic substances.

Exposure Assessment: Exploring the potential of chemical activity measurements within environmental exposure and risk assessments. The chemical activity of a contaminant drives many environmental processes that determine the fate and the effects of the contaminant. The chemical activity of many contaminants can be measured with equilibrium sampling devices (ESDs).

Effect Assessment: The control of freely dissolved concentrations and chemical activities in aquatic toxicity tests and the toxicity of (super)hydrophobic organic substances. Developing and applying a wide range of "passive dosing" techniques for the improved exposure control of laboratory experiments, including in vitro tests.
